HSBC Orion and DIGIT Pilot Development
The United Kingdom Government has tasked HSBC’s tokenization platform HSBC Orion with digital government bonds under the Digital Gilt Instrument (DIGIT) pilot issuance program. This step was announced by His Majesty’s Treasury on Thursday as part of the effort to modernize sovereign debt markets with blockchain technology. The DIGIT pilot update published in July 2025 aims to develop blockchain applications and native tokenization infrastructure. Tokenization will increase liquidity by representing bonds on the blockchain with instant on-chain settlement.

The DIGIT pilot will support the development and accessibility of secondary markets for short-term digital bonds within the Digital Securities Sandbox. Economy Minister Lucy Rigby stated that this innovation will position the UK as a leader in global capital markets and increase efficiency. HSBC Orion has facilitated $3.5 billion in digital bond issuances globally since 2023. The government also appointed the law firm Ashurst for legal services. This development could accelerate the integration of TradFi and DeFi, providing momentum to tokenization-focused projects like ORN.
